Xuepei Hou (director/writer/DP) is a New York-based filmmaker, currently in her second year pursuing an MFA filmmaking degree at Stony Brook University at the heart of Manhattan, associated with producer Christine Vachon’s Killer Films Production.
Before graduate school, she worked as a documentarian at Sanlian LifeWeek Magazine, a Beijing-based weekly founded in 1995, where she produced and directed over 20 short docs and shows with an average of 1 million views online. The experience of working in the field equipped her to ask the right questions and prepare her for an open mindset to internalize the boundless possibilities the world has to offer. In which also set tone for her later narrative storytelling style where she explores, discuss human dilemmas and intimate relationships under specific social context.
With a background in classical music, sound design plays a huge element in her film. She embrace all genres of music and recognize the beauty of clashing classical and modern. Together with her unique aesthetic style, she finds joy in orchestrating visuals and sound which can be seen in her narrative work.
As a filmmaker, she doesn’t want to be limited and labeled by forms or one particular role. She is simply a curious human want to make a connection with the world, then portraying it as she sees it, hope it will resonate with someone.
During her time at grad school, she written and directed two shorts, collaborate as DP for 9 short films.
Her first-year film “The Adults Are Talking” won best short at the Drama Film and Writing Festival, Best Short Film at the WILDsound Daily Festival, and official selection for Chain Film Festival.
