Xuepei Hou (b.1997) is a Beijing-born, New York-based director and cinematographer lives in Brooklyn. She is currently in her third year pursuing an MFA filmmaking degree at Stony Brook University at the heart of Manhattan, associated with producer Christine Vachon’s Killer Films Production, prepping her thesis short film.
Before graduate school, she dabbled in theatre and television before working as a documentarian and producer at SANLIAN LifeWeek Magazine —a Beijing-based weekly founded in 1995, where she made a series of documentary shorts with an average of 1 million online viewing, and interviewed musicians at the top of the industry. Years of interviewing and shooting guerrilla style equipped her with the ability to switch from different roles, embracing all genres and ideas, absorbing new information quickly, and adapting to unexpected situations with ease.
She is curious about human situations and cares about the world deeply. She wants to tell an honest story. She believes a great genuine story often roots from the contradictions and complexities of human nature.
